Paris - A French court has ruled that Wikipedia could not be held responsible for content posted by its users in a landmark ruling for the internet giant, officials said Friday.

University of Washington-Bothell professor Martha Groom has more of an "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em'' response to the online encyclopedia that anyone can write or edit.

Wikipedia has been cleared in a lawsuit which was originally filed in France. The Judge ruled that the free online open source encyclopedia cannot be held responsible for what web users write on it.

A French judge has dismissed a defamation and privacy case against Wikipedia, after ruling the free online encyclopaedia was not responsible for information introduced onto its website.

- The judge ruled that, despite its aspect, Wikipedia, is more like service provider than a newspaper or editor work (i.e. internet users publish their stuff on it, not the Wikimedia foundation)

The foundation's annual fundraiser supports the nonprofit organization that runs Wikipedia. The group announced Thursday that its 10,000th donation came from someone in Finland who donated 10 Euros. The total amount raised was not disclosed.

The US-based Wikipedia Foundation, which is behind the popular compendium, was sued by three French nationals over a Wikipedia article that said they were gay activists.
